“Once On This Island” Set in French Antilles Draws Rave Reviews on Broadway

The revival of Once On This Island is drawing huge accolades in New York City. The Broadway musical, which is set in the French Antilles, includes elements of the Romeo & Juliet story and elements of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, The Little Mermaid.

Once On This Island is the universal tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl in search of her destiny in this world. Upon falling in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, she is ready to risk everything for love when their divided cultures keep them apart. Guided by the powerful island gods – Erzulie, Asaka, Papa Ge, and Agwe – Ti Moune sets out on a remarkable journey to reunite with the man who has captured her heart.

The show is adapted from the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy, a Trinidad-born writer who was orphaned at a young age and grew up in New York. The one-act musical features lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty.

Nineteen-year-old ingenue, Hailey Kilgore, stars as Ti Moune. Her debut performance on broadway earned her a Tony nomination in 2018!
